The Housing Industry Association and Cordell have worked together to release a report detailing Australia’s biggest construction contractors. We take a closer look at the top three companies leading the way.

Brookfield Multiplex Constructions: Construction Giant

Brookfield Multiplex Constructions took out the top spot after being awarded $6.1 billion worth of contracts in the 2014/2015 financial year. These contracts came from a mix of community, commercial, and multi-unit residential projects. Brookfield Multiplex Constructions’ win is unsurprising, as nearly twice as many multi-residential and community projects launched in 2014/2015 compared to the previous year. Highlights of Brookfield Multiplex Constructions’ last financial year include commencing the first two buildings of Tim Gurner’s FV three-tower precinct in Queensland’s Fortitude Valley and construction of 1000 new student apartments at Monash University.

Laing O’Rourke Australia: Civil Construction Leader

While Laing O’Rourke Australia’s $6 billion worth of contracts was just shy of Brookfield Multiplex Constructions’ takings, this company took out the top spot for civil construction. Laing O’Rourke’s strong showing is expected after civil engineering projects rose by roughly 60 percent this financial year. In the last financial year, Laing O’Rourke Australia commenced work on the Wickham transport interchange in Newcastle and a new train maintenance centre at Wulkuraka, near Brisbane.

John Holland Pty Ltd: Civil Construction Projects Net Billions

Despite significantly less takings than Brookfield Multiplex Constructions and Laing O’Rourke Australia, John Holland Pty Ltd came third in the report. Its contracts totalled $3.7 billion and were predominantly made up of civil construction works. These included work on the Airport Drive project at Melbourne Airport and improvements to the car park at John Hunter Hospital, near Newcastle.
